Our Process Of Hair Follicle Drug Testing

Here is how we conduct the test at Relevant:

Booking: The very first thing you have to do is book us for a hair follicle drug test at your workplace. Please see our booking process for more info.

Onsite Collection: Once your booking is all done, our accredited technicians come up to your workplace for sample collection. Our trained technicians make sure the whole process goes smoothly and respectfully.

Offsite Collection: In case you don’t have an onsite workplace, we offer hair strand collection services at our offices. You can contact us online, and we will guide you through the next steps.

Storing: Since hair follicle samples can only be processed in the laboratory, our competent Authorised Technicians store and label the samples carefully to take them back to the laboratory.

Testing: After the sample reaches our NATA Certified Laboratory, we start processing the sample. Depending on the type of testing requested, we can provide a detection period from one month through to twelve months, depending on the length of hair.

Reporting Results: We generally report negative results within six (6) business days from collection of the sample, and for positive results within eight (8) business days from sample collection. This reporting is provided via a certificate of analysis, which is emailed to the client.

Benefits Of Hair Follicle Drug Testing

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug testing allows an extended detection period, typically from one month up to twelve months or more, depending on the length of the hair sample. This makes it ideal for long-term monitoring of drug and alcohol use.

High Accuracy and Reliability

Hair follicle testing is highly accurate and reliable, and is widely accepted and trusted for legal and employment purposes. Since the sample collection is directly supervised and carried out by our technicians, it is near impossible to tamper it. Additionally, hair retains drug metabolites within its structure, which cannot be washed out or externally altered.

Hair Testing Frequently Asked Questions

How much does hair follicle testing cost?

Hair follicle drug testing costs are dependent on the period of detection you would like and your location. They are more expensive than the regular urine or saliva test. For a specific quote for your hair drug and alcohol testing, please phone our friendly customer service team on 1300 489 489.

How much hair is cut for testing?

Two segments of hair are cut for a hair follicle drug testing. To make sure that the sample collection doesn’t ruin your hair, the hair strand samples are taken from two separate spots on the head.

Why are two samples collected?

We need to take two samples, one which is analysed and the second which is held for a period of time as a “referee” specimen should the test result be disputed.

Is this a hair follicle test?

No, many people refer to this test as a hair follicle test however this is incorrect. We cut the hair at the skin whereas hair follicle testing requires strands to be pulled from the scalp which can be a painful experience.

Does the detection period start from the day of the test?

No, we cut close to the scalp which means the detection period starts approximately seven days prior to the collection date. (Eg if the collection was conducted on the 10th of November, the detection period would be from approximately the 3rd of November)

What detection periods are available for hair drug testing?

Our detection period options range from three months to 12 months based on consultation from our expert team.

I have dreadlocks. Do you just take one or two dreadlocks?

No, we will take several samples from around the dreadlocks.

Can you use beard hair for a hair follicle test?

Yes. In case someone is bald, facial hair can also be used as a sample. For a 3-month detection, the hair sample needs to be at least 3 cm in length. For a longer period of detection, a longer hair sample will be needed.

Can you show a result for each period of time for my hair drug test?

Yes, please let our expert drug testing team know when you contact us and we will be able to provide you with a specific quote and options to suit your needs.

Do I need a referral from my doctor or lawyer for a hair drug test?

No, we do not need a referral from anyone for your hair drug or alcohol test.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

Please bring current government issued photographic identification to your appointment.

Some options include: drivers license, passport or personal identification card.

If my test comes back positive, will you notify the police?

No, we will only release the test results to you unless you provide us with written authorisation to release the results to another party.

Where is your drug and alcohol hair testing conducted?

We are able to collect hair samples at workplaces across Australia. All collected hair samples are sent to our NATA Accredited Laboratory who conducts analysis in Australia (unlike many providers, we do not send hair samples to overseas laboratories!).

Is your drug testing performed by franchisees or contractors?

To ensure our strict standards of quality are maintained, all drug testing personnel are direct employees of Relevant Drug Testing Solutions.

No franchisees, agents or contractors here – you’ll always be dealing direct!

What can compromise the accuracy of a hair drug test?

Certain hair treatments, like hair dye, bleach, or chemical processes, can change the structure of the hair and potentially interfere with the drug testing results.
